Our Ethos
The ethos of the Komo Centre is to include students with special needs into an inclusive mainstream school environment. In this way they can learn from their pre-school peers, by interacting with them and copying how they play and learn. It also gives mainstream students an opportunity to learn about the nature of children with autism; the difficulties they face; and to positively interact and value people with autism and severe learning difficulties.
It particularly focuses on building their communication and social skills. It runs an academic programme aimed at teaching the students basic maths and literacy skills, and supports their motor skill development as well as using sensory techniques to help children modulate themselves and reduce challenging behaviour. The students are taught activities of daily living in order to improve their independence, which is essential in Uganda if the students are to be able to function in society. The centre has helped many families in the surrounding areas in supporting their children at home, by giving advice and counselling, home visits and holiday programmes which help to offer respite by taking the children on cultural visits away from school.
The centre also offers an outreach programme aimed at giving advice and information to local schools in order to help promote disability awareness in Uganda. We offer educators advice on teaching and working with children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and severe learning difficulties.
